Lavrov expressed confidence in the discussions, calling them “highly productive” and noting that the two sides not only listened to each other but “genuinely heard” each other’s concerns.
He added that the US now has a clearer understanding of Russia’s stance, following detailed explanations and examples from President Putin’s previous statements.
The meeting in Riyadh, which was prompted by a joint initiative from Russian and US presidents, also focused on preparations for the next summit.
Lavrov revealed that foreign ministers and national security advisers had been tasked with determining the necessary steps for the summit before the two leaders could negotiate specific dates and timelines.
In addition to the Ukraine peace talks, Lavrov emphasized the importance of continuing dialogue to address global challenges, particularly the need to develop solutions for crises even when national interests diverge.
The discussions covered a wide range of issues, including enhancing diplomatic relations and economic cooperation, as well as addressing the potential risks posed by NATO’s expansion.
Lavrov also expressed his gratitude to Saudi Arabia for hosting an important meeting, highlighting the positive reception of their discussions.
