Palestinian Authority regains control of Rafah border crossing
A senior Egyptian source confirmed on Monday that the Palestinian Authority has regained control of the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt, according to CNN.
Rafah, the only border crossing between Gaza and Egypt, was the primary route for Palestinians entering and exiting the Strip before falling under 'Israeli' control in May 2024.
The decision to restore Palestinian Authority control over the crossing has faced sharp criticism. 'Israeli' far-right leader Itamar Ben Gvir accused Tel Aviv of "allowing the Palestinian Authority to control the Gaza crossing," according to a statement from his office.
As part of the ceasefire agreement, the crossing was reopened, allowing some Palestinians in need of medical treatment to leave Gaza.
Since Sunday, dozens of patients have been evacuated through Rafah for the first time in nine months.
The World Health Organization confirmed on Friday that between 12,000 and 14,000 people in Gaza require urgent medical evacuation.
