The International Court of Justice (ICJ) announced that Cuba formally joined South Africa's case against the Israeli Occupation, accusing it of genocide.

On Dec. 29, 2023, South Africa filed the case at the ICJ, accusing "Israel" of violating the 1948 Genocide Convention.

Under Article 63 of the ICJ Statute, any state party to the Genocide Convention can intervene in the court proceedings if questions arise regarding interpreting its provisions.

The Court’s interpretations are binding on all parties involved.

As a signatory to the 1948 Genocide Convention, Cuba will provide its interpretation of key articles, including Articles I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VIII, and IX, the ICJ confirmed.

The Court also invited South Africa and “Israel” to submit written comments on Cuba's declaration of intervention, in line with Article 83 of its rules.

Several countries, including Nicaragua, Colombia, Libya, Mexico, Palestine, Spain, Turkey, and Ireland, have previously joined the case.
