Mother of detained Gaza hospital chief Abu Saffiyya dies of heart attack
Palestinian sources reported early Wednesday that the mother of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiyya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza, who is currently detained by “Israeli” forces, has died from a heart attack.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza announced on December 28 that the “Israeli” military detained Dr. Abu Safiyya, along with several staff members from Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, and moved them to an unknown place for interrogation.
In a statement, the ministry said, "Israeli forces detained dozens of Kamal Adwan Hospital staff, including the director, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiyya, and transferred them to a detention center for questioning."
This development occurred shortly after the military launched an operation in the vicinity of the hospital – which has now ended.
The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed Friday that the military operation rendered Kamal Adwan Hospital, the last major healthcare facility in northern Gaza, non-operational.
The “Israeli” military confirmed that Dr. Hussam Abu Safiyya is currently in custody.
The military alleged that Safiyya was arrested on suspicion of involvement in "terrorist activities," according to their claims. It further stated that Abu Safiya is undergoing interrogation by “Israeli” security forces.
