The US announced sanctions against entities in Iran and Russia, accusing them of attempting to meddle in the 2024 presidential election, Anadolu Agency (AA) reported.

The Treasury Department identified the sanctioned entities as a subsidiary of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and a Russian organization linked to the Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU).

In a statement, the Treasury alleged that these groups engaged in activities designed to deepen socio-political divisions and sway the American electorate through disinformation campaigns.

“The Governments of Iran and Russia have targeted our election processes and institutions and sought to divide the American people through targeted disinformation campaigns,” said Bradley T. Smith, Acting Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence.

He added, “The United States will remain vigilant against adversaries who would undermine our democracy.”
