Assad family members arrested at Beirut airport

Lebanese judicial authorities issued an arrest order on Friday for the wife and daughter of Duraid al-Assad, after it was discovered that they were carrying forged passports, according to a Roya correspondent.

Duraid al-Assad is the son of Rifaat Ali al-Assad, the notorious Syrian former military officer and politician, known as the "Butcher of Hama." Rifaat is the younger brother of the late Syrian President Hafez al-Assad and the uncle of ousted President Bashar al-Assad.

Lebanese authorities detained Duraid al-Assad's wife and daughter, Rasha, at Beirut's Rafic Hariri International Airport when they were found to be in possession of fake travel documents.

Lebanese security sources stated that the wife and daughter entered Lebanon during the fall of the Syrian regime, using illegal crossings facilitated by a smuggler in exchange for large sums of money.
