The crash took plane near in the province of Sistan-Baluchistan which borders Afghanistan and Pakistan, and specifically near the city of Sikran.

“Second Brigadier General Hamid Mazandarani, the commander of the Nineveh Brigade of Golestan province, and his pilot, were martyred in this accident,” the statement said.

The death of Mazandarani sparked questions as to why the commander of a brigade based in the north would visit the southeast at the time.

Last month, ten Iranian border guards were killed in the same area, in which regular clashes with militants occur.
