Court acquits physical therapist accused of drugging, sexual assault in Jordan

Jordan's Grand Criminal Court has acquitted a physical therapist of charges of sexual assault filed by a woman in her 20s, who alleged that the incident occurred at his home.

The court ruled the defendant not guilty of the felony of indecent assault under Article 296/6 of the Penal Code due to insufficient evidence.

According to the court's decision, the complainant had known the defendant for two years prior to the incident, during which they became acquainted and started meeting regularly.

On the day of the incident, she received a phone call from the defendant and went to his apartment.

The ruling noted that the defendant allegedly served the woman a drink laced with a drug without her knowledge. After consuming it, she reportedly felt dizzy and experienced a rapid heartbeat. She attempted to leave, but the defendant asked her to stay.

The court's decision further mentioned that the defendant called several people to his apartment for massage services as part of his profession as a physical therapist.

During this time, he allegedly made sexual advances toward the complainant, who resisted and pushed him away.

The complainant claimed that her condition worsened due to the drug's effects, leading to sleeplessness for five days and hallucinations. She later informed her sister and filed a complaint.

The court found that the evidence presented by the prosecution was weak, inconsistent, and insufficient to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

The ruling said that criminal convictions must be based on clear and conclusive legal evidence, which was lacking in this case.
