Hebrew media reported that Sergeant Elishai Young, who was killed in battles in the Gaza Strip last Monday, was not an “Israeli” citizen.

Elishai Young was a member of the “African Hebrew Israelites” community and arrived from the United States to the Israeli Occupation –specifically in Dimona in the Negev Desert– in the late 1960s.

Members of the community told Hebrew media that he does not have an “Israeli” citizenship.

Yair Israel, a member of Dimona's “African Hebrew Israelites” community, told Walla news outlet that “he was the first from the community to fall.”

He confirmed that “many of our children serve in the [Israeli Occupation] army”.

He further berated “Israel”, saying that “it's hard to see our children fighting for a country that doesn't respect us.”

“He didn't have citizenship…he's fighting for the country, but once he's done, he still has to apply for citizenship? It's absurd!”

The “African Hebrew Israelites” arrived from Chicago in the late 1960, and requested citizenship under the “The Law of the Return”. However, the Israeli Occupation government denied their request and said they don’t quality for citizenship.

The same community has also faced deportations in recent years.
