“We cannot afford another generation to war,” Lebanese Prime Minister calls for immediate ceasefire
During a recent session of the UN Security Council, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati urged for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon amid escalating violence, highlighting a joint call initiated by the US and France, with the backing of the European Union (EU) and several Arab nations.
“The key lies in the implementation through Israel's commitment to executing international resolutions,” Mikati stressed.
In his address, Mikati acknowledged the critical role of France as a long-standing ally, commending its collaborative efforts with the US to draft an internationally supported statement aimed at halting the ongoing aggression.
He expressed gratitude to the Arab Group, particularly Algeria, for their unwavering support for Lebanon during these challenging times.
The Mikati's call for a ceasefire comes in response to a surge in violence that has resulted in significant civilian casualties, including many women and children. He painted a dire picture of the humanitarian crisis, with hospitals overwhelmed and struggling to care for the injured.
"Lebanon today is a victim of electronic, cyber, aerial, and maritime aggression,” Mikati warned.
Mikati's remarks included pointed questions directed at the international community regarding the protection of nations from similar aggressions in the future.
He underscored that the current tensions are part of a long history of conflicts that Lebanon has faced, urging the Security Council to take decisive measures to secure an immediate ceasefire and address the root causes of the violence.
“We cannot afford to lose another generation to war,” calling on all member states to take immediate action to ensure the restoration of peace and stability in Lebanon and the region.
