Sudanese army chief survives assassination attempt

General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, the chief of the Sudanese army, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt yesterday.

Eyewitnesses reported to Reuters that a drone strike targeted the Gibet army base, located approximately 100km from Port Sudan, the army’s de facto capital in the Red Sea state.

The attack occurred during a graduation ceremony at the base, and according to an army statement, the strike resulted in the deaths of five individuals.

The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the army's primary rival in the ongoing aggression, has not claimed responsibility for this or any other recent attacks.

The timing of the attack comes just a day after Sudan’s foreign ministry, aligned with the army, conditionally accepted a US invitation for peace talks scheduled to take place in Switzerland this August.

In response, the RSF stated it would engage in negotiations exclusively with the army, explicitly excluding the Islamist factions that are significant within the civil service.
