Former FM warns of Trump’s potential return to presidency
Former Foreign Minister Marwan Muasher warned on Monday about the potential return of former President Donald Trump to power in the United States, given the slim chances of current President Joe Biden securing a new term.
Muasher emphasized that the Arab-American vote could significantly influence Biden's chances of re-election.
Muasher noted that Trump's stance on Jordan and the Palestinian cause is well-known- – citing the fact that Trump only met with His Majesty King Abdullah II once during his four-year term.
During a discussion session organized by the Amman Group for Future Dialogues titled "The Aggression on Gaza and its Impact on Jordan," Muasher highlighted that Biden's success hinges on winning a majority in states with significant Arab-American populations. The number of Arab votes in these states exceeds the margin between Trump and Biden.
Muasher also touched on local elections, stating that political modernization in Jordan has been limited to legal reforms without changing the prevailing mindset. He pointed out the general disinterest in elections, including party elections, attributing this partly to the lack of organic development in the political party scene.
Furthermore, Muasher remarked on evident interference in the electoral process, expressing concerns that such interventions do not bode well for the evolution of party politics in Jordan.
Marwan al-Muasher is a former Jordanian diplomat and politician who was Jordan's foreign minister from 2002 to 2004 and its deputy prime minister during 2004 and 2005.
He is known for being Jordan's first ambassador to “Israel” and a former ambassador to the United States.
His Majesty King Abdullah highlighted at an earlier time the importance of ensuring that the upcoming parliamentary elections should be a “milestone”
In a meeting at Al Husseiniya Palace with politicians and columnists, King Abdullah urged political parties to capitalize on the upcoming phase to build clear and realistic platforms to win over voters.
His Majesty underlined the importance of increasing voter turnout in the upcoming elections by encouraging Jordanians, especially youth and women, to actively engage in the political modernization process.
The King said active participation requires that Jordanians feel political parties are working seriously to translate their platforms on the ground, and that they move from slogans to achieving tangible results.
