“UNRWA is facing political assassination attempt,” says FM with Commissioner-General

Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Safadi, in a joint press conference with UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini, affirmed Jordan’s continued support for the United Nations agency for Palestine refugees amidst the campaign led by “Israeli” claims against the organization.

“UNRWA is fulfilling its duty in Gaza despite the aggression on the Strip,” Safadi said. “UNRWA’s role cannot be replaced or dispensed with by any other entity.”

He added that UNRWA has all the tools to ensure that it adheres to all principles of work, ethics, and UN charters and regulations – citing an investigation conducted by the independent committee chaired by former French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna which found that “Israel” has ye to provide evidence of UNRWA employees being members of the Islamic Resistance Movements (Hamas).

UNRWA is facing a “political assassination attempt” after what happened on October 7, according to Safadi, adding that all accusations against the agency were proven false.

"However, the agency still faces significant financial challenges,” he continued.

He reaffirmed that supporting UNRWA is a top priority for His Majesty King Abdullah II, saying: “This is a consistent Jordanian stance.”

Safadi called for a comprehensive and transparent international investigation to hold those responsible for war crimes in Gaza accountable.

For his part, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini stated that half of Gaza's population is currently displaced in the streets and are forced to flee, stressing that it is time to begin investigations and hold those committing attacks in the Strip accountable.

"198 of our employees were killed during the war, and 160 of our sites were partially or completely destroyed,” Lazzarini warned, adding that no place in Gaza is safe – north or south.
