Number of suicides rises in Jordan in 2023

The number of suicides in Jordan rose to 160 during the past year, an increase of 15 cases compared to the figure recorded in 2022, according to data from the National Institute of Forensic Medicine.

Meanwhile, the number of homicides reached 103 in 2023, down from 118 cases in 2022, with the southern region witnessing 24 murders compared to 23 in the northern region.

Dr. Majed Al-Shmayleh, the director of the National Institute of Forensic Medicine, stated in an interview with Roya that half of the homicides were recorded in the central region, which includes more than three-quarters of the kingdom's population estimated at eight million.

Furthermore, fatalities from traffic accidents rose to 603 in 2023, a 9 percent increase from the previous year's figure of 551 deaths.

The tally of sexual assault cases reached 831 recorded incidents in 2023, with 606 cases in the central region, 176 cases in the north, and 49 in the south.
