German Chancellor Olaf Scholz urged the Israeli Occupation to abide by international law in Gaza, while simultaneously calling on Europe to enhance its military capabilities for self-defense.

During the 60th Munich Security Conference on Saturday, Scholz stated that his country calls on Tel Aviv to adhere to international law in the aggression against Gaza and refrain from opening a second front on the northern border with Lebanon.

He added that Iran must be prevented from exploiting the conflict to expand its influence.

On European affairs, Scholz emphasized that Europe must bolster its ability to defend itself to deter potential aggressors, regardless of who wins the upcoming US elections or how the war in Ukraine ends.

On the second day of the conference, which is dubbed as the "Davos of Defense," Scholz said, "We Europeans must pay more attention to our security, now and in the future," according to Reuters.

Scholz noted that Germany, the largest economy in Europe, has increased its defense spending to 2 percent of gross domestic product and will continue to meet this goal set by NATO.

He added that Germany is also discussing with its allies France and Britain the development of precision weapons capable of reaching long distances to ensure that its deterrence strategy remains sophisticated.
