Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah passed away at 86 years of age, as announced by Kuwat state TV.

"With deep sadness and sorrow, we mourn to the Kuwaiti people, the Arab and Islamic nations, and the friendly peoples of the world, the late Emir of the country, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who passed away on Saturday," the statement said.

Sheikh Nawaf was sworn in back in Sept. of 2020 after the death of his half-brother, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, in the US at 91 years of age.

On November 29, the Emir was hospitalized following an emergency health issue, according to state news agency KUNA.

The Emir was raised in Dasman Palace during the rule of his father, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber.

He received his education in Kuwait, including at the Mubarakia School.

Sheikh Nawaf served as the third Minister of Interior and the fourth Minister of Defense in Kuwait's history.

He had the longest tenure as the head of the Ministry of Interior from 1976 to 1986, during a critical period of security threats to Kuwait.

He also led the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor in the first government after the liberation of Kuwait.

Designated Crown Prince on Feb. 7, 2006, during Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad's reign, he was unanimously sworn in by the National Assembly on Feb. 20 of the same year.

He took the constitutional oath before the National Assembly on September 30, 2020, becoming the fourth Emir to do so in Kuwait's history.
