15 tons of expired food seized after manipulation of shelf life
The oversight and inspection teams of the Jordan Food & Drug Administration (JFDA), in collaboration with the Royal Department for Environmental Protection - Environmental Inspection Department, the specialized security center, preventive security, and Criminal Investigation Unit, raided a residential property in the central region Sunday and seized a a large quantity of expired food items with manipulated expiration dates.
Dr. Nizar Muhaidat, the Director-General of the JFDA, said in a statement received by "Roya" that the confiscated food items inside the house, estimated at about 10 tons, had their production and expiration dates replaced with false dates to indicate that they were still valid. This manipulation was done using printing machines designed specifically for this purpose.
The confiscated food items included various supply materials, canned goods, juices, sugar, oils, and others. Muhaidat explained that the authorities seized the entire quantity of confiscated food items inside the house for disposal purposes and confiscated the machines used in the manipulation. The administration will take legal action against those responsible for this offense.
He added that the oversight and inspection teams continued their operations until the early morning hours, tracking the entire quantity of food items whose production and expiration dates were manipulated in the mentioned house. They seized the entire quantity, estimated at about 5 tons, at a separate location before the offenders were able to distribute it to citizens. The entire seized quantity was taken for the purposes of disposal, and the facility was closed.
