Censorship concerns: 'Eye on Palestine' removed from Instagram

Instagram users were met with frustration and disbelief on Wednesday as one of the most prominent multilingual pro-Palestine accounts, Eye On Palestine, suddenly became inaccessible. This unexpected suspension prompted a wave of reactions on social media platforms like X, formerly known as Twitter, where users voiced their concerns.

Renowned social media personality Jackson Hinkle expressed his dismay, highlighting the significant ban: "Zuckerberg’s Meta has BANNED the Instagram account “Eye on Palestine” with over 6 million followers! Reminds me of when they banned ALL RUSSIAN NEWS at the start of the Ukraine War!"

Another user on X chimed in, emphasizing the magnitude of the account's reach: "They deleted eye.on.palestine account that had over 6 M followers. Because they are scared of the truth."

In a similar vein, one user emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "And it’s happening. Instagram removed both Eye on Palestine accounts. They are erasing genocidal history."

This incident, however regrettable, is not an isolated occurrence. Instagram has faced criticism in the past for taking similar actions against accounts and posts that support Palestine.

Activists and celebrities have reported instances where their content addressing the plight of Palestinians has been subject to censorship by the social media platform.

This latest episode serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by advocates for Palestinian rights in the digital sphere.

The pro-Palestine account, with over six million followers, is known for its constant support for the Palestinian cause and its people.

It also shares daily news and videos about the reality of the oppression of millions of Palestinians.

This comes as Operation Aqsa Typhoon, launched by Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, continues for the 19th consecutive day in response to Israeli Occupation violations in the occupied Palestinian territories, which have been ongoing for decades.

In retaliation, the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) has launched a campaign against the Gaza Strip, conducting a series of airstrikes in various areas.
