Japan issued a tsunami advisory Thursday following a 6.6-magnitude earthquake near its remote Pacific Ocean islands but rescinded it approximately two hours later. No damage was reported.

The advisory, which is the second-lowest level on a four-stage warning scale, urged residents of the Izu island chain, extending south from the Tokyo area, to steer clear of coastal areas and river mouths.

The US Geological Survey reported a series of offshore earthquakes in the area Thursday morning.

Although the quake was not felt on the islands or in the Tokyo region, the Japan Meteorological Agency cautioned that a tsunami, possibly reaching 1 meter high, could impact the island coasts. A minor tsunami of about 30 centimeters was observed at Yaene on Hachijo island, according to the agency.

No damage occurred, and the agency lifted the tsunami advisory about two hours later.

Japan is known for its high seismic activity. The devastating magnitude 9.0 earthquake in 2011 triggered a tsunami that caused widespread destruction in northern Japan and led to meltdowns at the Fukushima nuclear plant.
