Secretary-General of the Higher Population Council, Issa Masarweh, has urged Jordanians to practice family planning and maintain a gap of at least three years between childbirths.

This recommendation comes in light of the current economic conditions, particularly in the realm of education, where having multiple individuals pursuing higher education places additional financial strain on household heads.

Masarweh told Roya Saturday that the rate of closely spaced childbirths in Jordanian families is notably high.

He considered the 29 percent of Jordanian births born within less than two years after their predecessors to be a "significant figure."

Between 2010 and 2022, the number of births totaled around 2.7 million, averaging approximately 200,000 births annually.

He emphasized that international studies underscore the significance of birth spacing in safeguarding the health of both mothers and children, especially concerning the provision of healthcare and education.

According to Masarweh, the Ministry of Health recently launched a nationwide campaign for family planning, which is still ongoing.

He stressed the importance of evaluating the campaign to gauge the response of the target demographic.

He further explained that the ministry provides 500 health centers to offer counseling on pregnancy spacing through modern methods.

He added, "While the opportunities for counseling in this regard are numerous, they are often overlooked."
