Following reports of TikTok's return in Jordan without requiring a VPN, a source confirmed Friday that a technical glitch was responsible for the app's reactivation on one of the mobile telecommunication companies.

The source emphasized that no agreement has been reached with the platform up to this point.

The technical issue has been resolved, resulting in the platform being disabled once again.

Earlier Friday, several social media users circulated news about the return of the TikTok application in Jordan without the need for a VPN.

A number of users reported that the TikTok app, which had been banned since last year, has returned to working through some telecommunication lines.

Last month, Faisal Al-Shboul, the Minister of Government Communication and the government's official spokesperson spoke about the potential lifting of the TikTok ban in Jordan. TikTok has been banned in Jordan since December.

Shboul told Roya that discussions are actively taking place with TikTok representatives.

He further mentioned that the platform had committed unacceptable mistakes, pointing out concerns regarding the algorithms they employ for content removal, especially during sensitive periods that led to detrimental effects.

In July, Jordan's Prime Minister Bisher Al-Khasawneh addressed the reasons behind the dispute between Jordan and TikTok saying the conflict centers around the content being published on the platform.

During a dialogue session at Yarmouk University entitled "Visions of Modernization: Youth is the Focus of Concern," he noted that Jordan's condition for TikTok's reactivation in the Kingdom is that the company must establish an office in Jordan or a regional office.

In January, a TikTok spokesperson told Roya that the platform is committed to improving and updating its safety policies and tools.

The spokesperson said that the TikTok community in Jordan “has been inspiring creativity in different aspects whether its science, education or sports.”

“354 million views from Jordan to our #LearnonTiktok hashtag, and 138 million views of #Booktok is a testament to the creativity of this community.”

According to the spokesperson, TikTok will continue to take all the required appropriate actions against content that violates their community guidelines.

“We are also committed to keeping TikTok a safe and positive environment for our global community.”

On Dec. 16, 2022, TikTok was suspended temporarily in Jordan by authorities after some users posted videos aimed at spreading false news and acts of violence.
