Jordanians are eagerly anticipating whether the government will officially designate Wednesday, July 19, as a public holiday in celebration of the Hijri New Year. There is speculation that the government may opt to shift the holiday to Thursday, creating an extended weekend for citizens.

The Hijri New Year, also referred to as the Islamic New Year, is observed on the first day of the first month in the Islamic calendar known as Muharram. This significant day holds great importance for Muslims as it commemorates the Prophet Muhammad's migration from Mecca to Medina alongside his companions.

In the previous year, Prime Minister Bisher Al-Khasawneh declared July 30, 2022, as a public holiday for various entities, including ministries, official departments, public institutions, universities, municipalities, joint services councils, the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), and government-owned companies. This holiday was observed to honor the Hijri New Year.
