'There is a political will to restore relations between Egypt, Turkey': Shoukry

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said that there is a political will to restore relations between Egypt and Turkey.

Shoukry added, in a press conference with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, Saturday, that they discussed bilateral relations between the two countries, and spoke about the challenges facing their countries.

He pointed out that they discussed the full restoration of relations between the two countries.

He stressed that the economic relations with Turkey were not affected between the two countries last period, noting that the trade exchange between Cairo and Ankara amounted to USD 9 billion.

In turn, Cavusoglu said that Cairo and Ankara are taking positive steps to enhance relations, noting that there will be an upcoming meeting between Sisi and Erdogan.

Earlier Saturday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu arrived at Cairo International Airport, according to Egyptian media outlets.

Cavusoglu's visit is the first of its kind to Egypt in more than a decade. His visit came following an invitation from his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukry, for joint talks between the two countries.

Egyptian foreign ministry said Cavusoglu’s visit will pave the way for the resumption of normal relations between the two countries.

"The visit will launch an in-depth dialogue on different aspects of bilateral relations and regional and international issues of common concern with the aim of reaching a mutual understanding that serves the interests of the two countries and peoples," Ahmed Abu Zeid, the ministry’s spokesperson said.

Extensive talks will be held in the presence of the delegations of the two countries, after which the two ministers will participate in a joint press conference.
