Paris St-Germain’s player Achraf Hakimi was officially charged with rape, said the prosecutor's department of Nanterre in France on Friday, according to reports.

A preliminary investigation was opened against Hakimi last week after a woman, 24, went to the police accusing him of rape while Hakimi lawyer said that what happened was an extortion attempt.

Hakimi was questioned by investigators Thursday and then was placed under judicial supervision, according to the prosecutor's office. 

The Moroccan player firmly denied the rape allegations and Paris St-Germain also showed strong support for their player.

The football club issued a statement saying: “The club supports the player, who has firmly denied the accusations and trusts the justice system.”

“Paris St-Germain is an institution that promotes respect on and off the pitch,” the statement stressed.
