A Moroccan Jew, born in 1954, is considered by the Israeli Occupation as the most provocative man after he was convicted in 1986 on charges of espionage and exposing information

Mordechai Vanunu’s family immigrated to Tel Aviv in 1963. In 1971, he became a demining specialist in the Israeli Occupation army, but he aspired to join the Air Force.

- Dimona reactor-

After his military service ended, Vanunu joined the Negev Nuclear Research Center, which is a facility used to develop and manufacture nuclear weapons.

He started there as an apprentice and ended up at an underground facility, which he says is dedicated to the production of plutonium, lithium deuteride and beryllium materials that are used to make nuclear bombs.

In 1985, he sent confidential photographs taken by a camera he secretly smuggled inside the reactor as well as information about the Israeli Occupation's nuclear capabilities to journalists after he found out he was going to lose his job.

Such information served as evidence of the existence of a huge force of nuclear weapons in Tel Aviv.

This discovery also showed that the nuclear program of the Israeli Occupation is an arsenal that is larger and more advanced than previously thought.

-Extremely confidential-

Vanunu seized two films classified as ‘top secret’ that explain some of the work taking place at the Dimona reactor and the equipment used there, including equipment that are used for the extraction of radioactive materials intended for military production and laboratory models of thermonuclear devices.

The information he uncovered made it possible for experts to estimate that the Israeli Occupation had sufficient plutonium for about 150 nuclear weapons.

-Last August-

On Aug. 10, the Supreme Court of Israeli Occupation rejected a request submitted by Vanunu to remove the restrictions that were imposed on him which do not allow him to leave Tel Aviv and place him under permanent monitoring.

The court defended its decision by saying that Vanunu still poses a threat to state security and possesses information that if leaked, could damage the occupation’s security.

Vanunu posted on his Facebook account a picture of himself along with a caption that said, “Sep' 2022,No freedom yet, continue to wait, nothing changed,no news here, one more month, and one more year, since 1986,but freedom must come ,born to be free, see you in freedom.”

 -Imprisonment of Mordechai Vanunu-

The former nuclear technical expert served an 18-year prison sentence and the first 11 years of which were spent in solitary confinement, as a punishment.

He was arrested and secretly kidnapped from London to Italy, and then to Tel Aviv.

Since he was released from prison in 2004, several prohibitions were imposed on him such as prohibiting him from leaving the country, speaking to any foreigner unless granted approval to do so by Shin Bet, or coming within 500 meters of a border crossing or airport or 90 meters of a foreign embassy.

Mordechai Vanunu was known for his sympathy with the Palestinians as he once said, "We don't need a Jewish state. There needs to be a Palestinian state. Jews can, and have lived anywhere, so a Jewish State is not necessary."
