Raed al-Momani, the director of forensic medicine department at al-Bashir Hospitals, said that the total number of suicide cases registered in Jordan in the first six months of 2022 totaled to 65 cases, and 45 of whom were males and 20 were females. By comparison, in 2021 a total of 68 cases were recorded in the same period (49 males and 19 females).

Momani explained that suicide with a rope around the neck is the most used method, with 35 cases recorded to have killed themselves like so, followed by throwing oneself from high places with 10 cases.

Some of the remaining cases were recorded as follows:

  • Four cases used the method of poisoning due to swallowing pills
  • Two cases as a result of gas poisoning
  • One case used an insecticide
  • One case involved inhaling chemicals
  • One case was a drug overdose.

Momani said that anyone who attempts suicide suffers from a disorder and needs psychological treatment.

According to figures issued by the Amman Public Prosecution Department, in the first eight months of this year, 117 suicide attempts were recorded in the capital, Amman, 100 of them were attempted inside a private place, and 17 attempts were in public.

Notably, in an interview with Roya, a judicial source clarified that the law punishes anyone who incites suicide with penalties of up to 20 years in prison.
