Russia confirmed on Friday that it had carried out an air strike on Kyiv during a visit by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, in the first attack of its kind on the Ukrainian capital in nearly two weeks.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced Friday that it had deployed "long-range and high-precision air" weapons that destroyed "the production buildings of the Artyom Missile and Space Corporation in Kyiv."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky considered the strikes that took place after his talks with Guterres an attempt by Russia to "humiliate the United Nations and everything it represents."

Before the bombing Guterres visited Bucha and other suburbs of Kyiv, where Moscow is accused of committing war crimes. Russia denies killing civilians.

Germany has condemned the "inhumane" strikes on Kyiv, which show that Russian President Vladimir Putin "absolutely does not respect international law."

In a residential neighborhood of Kyiv, AFP reporters saw fire and smoke billowing from a building following the Russian bombing.

"I heard two missiles and two explosions," Oleksandr Stroganov, 34, told AFP.

"The enemy bombed Kyiv in the evening. Two strikes on the Shevchenkovsky district, on the lower floors of an apartment building," said the mayor of the capital, Vitali Klitschko.
