The Mexican President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, declared his country’s “pandemic under control,” before a crowd gathered in Mexico's main square, as Omicron raises concern around the world.

“Today, 86 percent of Mexicans over the age of 18 are immunized with both doses," he said in a speech in a ceremony commemorating the third anniversary of the formation of his government.

“We have started vaccinating young people aged 15-18 and will give boosters starting with the elderly.”

The Mexican president added that having the pandemic “under control allows us to return to our initial plan to improve health services” such as increasing the number of doctors, which currently stands at 1.2 per thousand people.

Next year, he added, “if all goes well, we will get the Mexican vaccine ‘Patria.’”

With a population of 126 million, Mexico has recorded 3.8 million cases of COVID-19 and 294,428 deaths.

The Mexican president also stressed that the economy is still recovering from the crisis caused by the pandemic.

“I have no doubt that soon and very soon, we will finally come out of the economic crisis. We are not in debt like other countries, and we have not lost public revenues,” he said.
