The Israeli Occupation government said on Sunday that combating climate warming is a "national security" priority and pledged to "facilitate" investments in green energy, days before the opening of the 26th Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP26).

"Combating global warming is a new concern for Israel's national security," said a statement issued by Prime Minister Naftali Bennett's office.

The new coalition government headed by Bennett announced last June its intention to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 27 percent by 2030 and 85 percent by 2050, compared to the 2015 level.

To reduce emissions, the Jewish state, one of the countries in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development with the least investment in public transport, plans to promote less energy-intensive modes of transport.

"Today the government has approved several decisions to promote clean, low-carbon transportation," added Bennett, who is scheduled to take part in COP26, taking place from October 31 to November 12 in Scotland.

He explained that the government will announce a "series of measures" in this direction.

"We want to promote innovation and facilitate (work) entrepreneurs in the green energy sector," Energy Minister Karen El Harar said.

Environment Minister Tamar Zandberg accused previous governments of "slowing down" on this front.

Palestinians and members of the international community have been largely critical of the Israeli Occupation's environmental policy in Palestine, which sees severe shortages of water, land rights, and more.

Earlier this week, Palestinian Prime Minister Shtayyeh said, "The biggest challenge facing the Palestinian environment is settlement and its waste, and Israel continues to control our natural resources and lack access to our lands behind the wall, and worse than that, Israel uses our lands as a dumping ground for solid, chemical and electronic waste, in addition to uprooting trees and bulldozing lands in favor of settlement building and settler expansion."

The Prime Minister continued: "Palestine does not contribute to environmental pollution in the world. On the contrary, our environment is polluted by occupation. His Excellency the President has signed all agreements related to climate and environment, and we are committed to this global effort that aims to reduce emissions on the one hand and maintain a clean and green environment on the other hand."
