His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday participated in the Global COVID-19 Summit: Ending the Pandemic and Building Back Better hosted by US President Joe Biden.

The summit, held virtually with the participation of a number of heads of state and leaders from international organisations and philanthropies, aims to expand on global efforts to counter the COVID-19 pandemic and bolster recovery.

In a recorded message at the summit, King Abdullah stressed the importance of building a concentrated international response to pandemics, calling for more cohesive and coordinated efforts to mitigate the health, humanitarian, and economic repercussions of such diseases.

His Majesty noted that the international community has an interest and a moral responsibility in ensuring the equitable and effective distribution of vaccines, noting Jordan’s efforts in providing vaccines for citizens, residents, and refugees alike.

The King reaffirmed the need to continue vaccination campaigns to build global immunity, noting that it would, in turn, boost economic recovery efforts.

The summit, in line with the US administration’s effort to build a unified global target in the fight against COVID-19, was held to help achieve the target of vaccinating 70 percent of the world’s population within a year.

During the summit, President Biden announced a series of measures to help achieve that goal, including donating 500 million more vaccine shots to lower-income countries.
