20 tons of highly explosive ammonium nitrate seized in Lebanon

The Lebanese security forces seized a truck carrying 20 tons of highly explosive ammonium nitrate, in the Bednayel region, east of the country.

This comes one year after the devastating Beirut port explosion that shook the country to its core.

On Aug. 4 2020, hundreds of tons of ammonium nitrate were stored carelessly at the Port for years and finally exploded, devastating the Lebanese capital and leaving more than 200 dead and thousands injured.

According to a security source, the Lebanese Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, opened a quick investigation and asked the Minister of Interior to go immediately to the site and take legal action.

Investigations are still ongoing.

The Lebanese Interior Minister, Bassam Mawlawi, said that after finding a truck loaded with 20 tons of dangerous ammonium nitrate, the security forces intervened to remove it from the location.

However, no further details regarding the investigation or information about the detainees were revealed or the destination the truck was headed to.

The ammonium nitrate was transferred to a safe place in the Bednayel Plain, eastern Lebanon.

Lebanon is still recovering from the explosion of the port of Beirut in August 2020 which occurred after tons of the substance was stored in the 12th warehouse of the port.
