The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs, Ayman Safadi, and the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, discussed Thursday the efforts required to stop the escalation of violence in occupied Jerusalem, Gaza and the rest of the Palestinian territories by Israeli Occupiers.

The two ministers reviewed the preparations for holding the UN Security Council session that will be held Friday to discuss the dangerous situation in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Safadi and Lavrov stressed the importance of stopping the escalation, with Safadi indicating the solution is to stop the Israeli Occupation's violations and attacks and the illegal and provocative measures in Jerusalem and the rest of the Palestinian territories, and end the aggression on Gaza.

The two ministers agreed that the recent escalation reflects the danger of the continuing absence of a political horizon and the necessity of immediate action to find a way to reach a two-state solution on the basis of international law.

Safadi stressed the need to preserve the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem and its holy sites, noting that the Israeli Occupation authorities are obligated to do so, as an occupying power.

He also stressed that the displacement of the citizens of Sheikh Jarrah from their homes is a crime that must be prevented.

Safadi emphasized that security and stability cannot be achieved unless the occupation ends, which requires exerting every effort to re-launch an effective and real peace process to reach a two-state solution in accordance with international law.

The two ministers highlighted the need and importance of the role of an international quartet and the need to convene it as soon as possible in order to restore momentum to the efforts aimed at resolving the conflict.

Safadi and Lavrov agreed to maintain coordination and communication in the efforts aimed at stopping the escalation and focusing efforts on finding the political horizon to solve the conflict according to the approved references.
