The European Union's (EU) medicines regulator, the European Medicines Agency (EMA), recommended the authorization of the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) COVID-19 vaccine, according to CNN.

The EMA's decision was announced amid vaccine shortages across all 27-member states of the EU.

The EMA released a statement saying "After a thorough evaluation, EMA's human medicines committee concluded by consensus that the data on the vaccine were robust and met the criteria for efficacy, safety and quality."

The J&J vaccine will be the fourth to be authorized by the EU after the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and the Moderna vaccine.

EMA executive director Emer Cooke said "With this latest positive opinion, authorities across the European Union will have another option to combat the pandemic and protect the lives and health of their citizens."
