Wednesday, the European Union Medicines Regulatory Authority approved Moderna's coronavirus vaccine, authorizing the EU's 27 member states to begin using the vaccine.

The Amsterdam-based regulator said in a statement that "The European Medicines Agency recommended granting a license to conditionally market the Moderna vaccine against COVID-19, in order to prevent people from 18 years of age from contracting the coronavirus."

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was previously the only vaccine authorized by the EU.
