The US embassy in Khartoum announced that Sudan has been formally removed from 'state sponsor of terrorism' list and will come into effect Monday.

"The congressional notification period of 45 days has lapsed and the Secretary of State has signed a notification stating rescission of Sudan's State Sponsor of Terrorism designation is effective as of today (December 14), to be published in the Federal Register," the US embassy said in a statement on Facebook.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo hailed the move as a "radical shift" in relations with Sudan.

"The designation of Sudan as a state sponsor of terrorism has been officially canceled. This represents a fundamental shift in our bilateral relations towards more cooperation and support for Sudan's historic transition to democracy," Pompeo said in a statement.

Sudan has been classified as a state sponsor of terrorism since 1993,  after the first attack on the World Trade Center in New York. The designation severely hampered investments as most foreign investors avoid raising the ire of the US authorities.

Removing Sudan from the Washington blacklist was a primary goal of the new government after the ouster last year of President Omar al-Bashir, who had hosted al-Qaeda.

"We commend the calls of the Sudanese people for freedom, peace and justice, and we congratulate the members of the civilian-led transitional government for their courage in working to fulfill the aspirations of the citizens they serve," Pompeo said.

In October, President Donald Trump ordered to remove Sudan from the list, after the country normalized relations with the Israeli Occupation.
