The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has stated that more than 7,7 million people have been displaced in Sudan since the onset of the conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces on April 15, 2023.

In a statement issued by the organization's Director-General, António Vitorino, on its official website, the international community is urged to intensify funding efforts and not abandon civilians bearing the brunt of the nine-month-long conflict in Sudan.

Vitorino emphasized the urgent need for a coordinated and continuous humanitarian response to address the escalating needs of the world's largest displacement crisis. She underscored the necessity of a ceasefire in Sudan to enable people to rebuild their lives with dignity.

During her visit to East Chad, Vitorino highlighted the direct impact of the conflict on refugees, emphasizing the need to halt hostilities to allow people to rebuild their lives with dignity. She pointed out that ongoing support is essential for providing humanitarian assistance and moving towards long-term recovery and solutions.

Six million out of the 7,7 million have been internally displaced within Sudan, and an additional 1.7 million crossing borders into South Sudan, Chad, Ethiopia, Egypt, the Central African Republic, and Libya.

The IOM appealed for USD 307 million in funding during the current year to reach 1.2 million individuals affected by this conflict.
