Thursday, the European Union published emergency measures for fishing, land and air transport that will take effect from January 1 if no Brexit agreement is reached with the UK by then.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, "There is no guarantee that if an agreement is reached it can enter into force in time, and our responsibility is to be prepared for all eventualities including the absence of an agreement with the United Kingdom as of January 1. 2021."

The publication of these measures comes a day after a dinner in Brussels between von der Leyen and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, during which they indicated their continuation of differences and set a deadline until Sunday to determine the fate of the negotiations.
