President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga have come to an agreement Monday, that the next Olympic Games will be held in the Japanese capital, Tokyo, on the new date set in 2021, despite the continuing coronavirus crisis.

Bach arrived in Tokyo Sunday and held talks with Suga for the first time since he assumed his presidential position September. They discussed the necessary measures to hold the games next summer in a safe atmosphere, despite the recent surge in COVID-19 cases in Europe and the United States.

Suga stressed that he was "determined" to host the Olympic Games, which was decided last March to postpone it for a year, which is unprecedented in the history of the Olympics, and is scheduled to start on July 23, 2021.

"We stick to our commitment to host a safe Olympic event, through close coordination with the International Olympic Committee," Suga said.

Bach expressed confidence that the Olympic Games will be held with an audience, he told reporters after the meeting with Suga.

"In this meeting, we were totally in agreement with the determination and confidence to achieve tremendous success in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and Paralympics next summer here in Tokyo," Bach said.
