A heartwarming video of an elderly man feeding at least 15 cats in the street is making the rounds on social media.

The man, identified as Ghassan by the person filming him, has apparently been taking care of street cats in Jordan for 17 consecutive years.

The person filming the animal carer said that Ghassan does this “out of the goodness of his heart, without expecting anything in return.”

It is not clear where in the country the video was taken, but it is uplifting to see someone care so deeply for animal welfare, in a country where some animals remain without any rights.

In Petra, for example, donkeys, camels and horses are still being used to carry heavy items and visitors in all weather conditions, without taking into consideration that they need rest and care.

In 2017, a video that went viral on social media showed donkeys, horses and camels suffering from rope and chain wounds in Petra. Animal rights activists were furious and urged the government to take action against their owners.

In light of the scandal, the Princess Alia Foundation and international animal charity Four Paws said that they had already taken steps to improve the welfare of those animals, starting with providing water, food and new stables, as well as lighter carriages, for the working horses.
