Elon Musk has revealed that social media company X, previously known as Twitter, will eliminate a protective feature that enables users to block other accounts, marking another controversial decision for the platform he acquired last year.

The block function currently allows users to prevent specific accounts from contacting them, viewing their posts, or following them. Musk shared on the platform, “Block is going to be deleted as a ‘feature’, except for DMs [direct messages],” saying later: “It makes no sense.”

He specified that the mute function, which shields users from seeing designated accounts without notifying the other party, will remain intact.

The removal or restriction of the block feature could potentially conflict with guidelines outlined by Apple's App Store and Alphabet's Google Play.

Apple mandates that apps with user-generated content incorporate the capability to block abusive users. The Google Play Store requires apps to provide an in-app mechanism for blocking user-generated content and users.
