A suspect has been taken into custody and charged after US Secret Service officers found him armed inside a vehicle near the White House, claiming he heard voices directing him to kill the US President Donald Trump, the agency and federal officials announced.
The arrest occurred on Thursday night when Secret Service officers approached an individual who was "acting suspicious" inside a parked car, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
US officials identified the suspect as Ronny Yordrix Guanipa Chrinos.
Authorities stated that Chrinos went on to describe hearing voices in his head that told him to travel to the nation’s capital and kill the Republican president.
Following the initial encounter, officers discovered that the vehicle Chrinos was inside had been reported stolen.
A subsequent search revealed three different firearms along with dozens of rounds of ammunition.
The incident is the latest in a series of arrests executed by the Secret Service and partner law enforcement agencies involving individuals who have allegedly threatened the lives of US President Trump or members of his family since his return to office last year.
In its statement, DHS described Chrinos as a migrant from Venezuela who is in the country illegally after crossing into the United States through Texas in March 2024. DHS confirmed that Chrinos has been formally charged and remains in the custody of the US Marshals Service.
The White House did not provide comment on the arrest, referring all inquiries to the Department of Homeland Security and the US Secret Service.
“Thanks to our brave Secret Service officers, this illegal alien with three firearms in his vehicle was arrested near the White House before he could harm anyone,” Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in the department's statement.
