  • South Korea plans to deploy maritime patrol aircraft and a specialized mine-detection and clearance team near the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Seoul has expanded the operational area of its Cheonghae naval unit, previously assigned to anti-piracy operations off Somalia in the Gulf of Aden.
  • The deployment will extend to waters south of Oman, near the strategic waterway.

South Korea's Defense Ministry announced Thursday that the country plans to deploy maritime patrol aircraft and a specialized mine-detection and clearance team near the Strait of Hormuz to help keep the strategic waterway open and ensure the safety of international shipping.

The ministry said Seoul had formally decided to expand the operational area of its Cheonghae naval unit, which has been conducting anti-piracy operations off the coast of Somalia in the Gulf of Aden. The unit's deployment will now extend to waters south of Oman, near the Strait of Hormuz.

The move comes amid growing concerns over potential disruptions to oil shipments and critical supply chains in the Gulf, as tensions and security threats increasingly jeopardize maritime traffic through one of the world's most important energy shipping routes.
