  • The flagship 24-team competition was originally scheduled to take place between Jan. 7 and Feb. 5, 2027.
  • Officials cited alignment with the international football calendar, player conditioning, favorable winter climate conditions, and logistical readiness as key factors behind the timing change

The 2027 AFC Asian Cup hosted by Saudi Arabia has been rescheduled to take place from Dec. 23, 2027, to Jan. 21, 2028, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the local organizing committee announced in a joint statement on Tuesday.

The continental championship was originally slated to run from Jan. 7 to Feb. 5, 2027. The shift pushes the tournament's start back by nearly a year, following consultations between the AFC, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF), and the Saudi 2027 local organizing committee.

The scheduling adjustment is intended to provide an optimal calendar window that aligns with international fixture lists while ensuring ideal climatic and physical conditions for competing players, according to the announcement.

Organizers noted that the winter timeframe across late December and January provides suitable weather across host venues, allowing the 24 participating national teams to compete under optimal conditions.

The joint release added that the updated timeline provides expanded operational and logistical flexibility to prepare and test modern stadium infrastructure, training sites, and transit systems planned for the event.

The local organizing committee reiterated its commitment to delivering an unprecedented tournament experience in close partnership with the AFC and relevant domestic sectors. The 2027 Asian Cup forms a central component of Saudi Arabia’s broader sports development agenda, which includes hosting multiple continental and international tournaments, culminating in the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
