US President Donald Trump has joked about renaming the Strait of Hormuz after himself, telling supporters at a campaign rally in Salina, Kansas, that he intended to call the strategically important waterway the “Trump Strait.”

“So now I have a lake, I have a gulf, I need a river and an ocean, and maybe a strait,” Trump told the crowd. “So I’m gonna call the Hormuz Strait the Trump Strait if you don't mind. I think the jihadists won't have much of a problem. They'll love that. They'll be very happy”.

Trump's latest comment follows a similar remark during an address at the Future Investment Initiative in Miami in late March. During that speech, he referred to the strategic waterway as the “Strait of Trump” while discussing Iran's need to reopen the passage. “Iran needs to open up the Strait of Trump, I mean, Hormuz,” he said.

He then continued with a mock apology, saying: “Excuse me. I'm so sorry. Such a terrible mistake... The fake news will say, ‘He accidentally said’, No, there's no accidents with me, not too many. If there were, we'd have a major story”.
