British police arrested 325 people during a protest outside the United States Embassy in London on Saturday in support of Palestine Action, a group proscribed under the country's counter-terrorism laws, authorities said Sunday.
The Metropolitan Police said that 320 of the 325 detentions were made specifically under the Terrorism Act for showing support for a banned organization. Under UK law, membership in or vocal support for a proscribed organization carries penalties of up to 14 years' imprisonment.
The demonstration comes days ahead of a two-day High Court hearing set to examine the legality of the British government’s controversial Jul. 2025 decision to designate Palestine Action as a terrorist entity.
The United States enacted a similar designation in August as part of measures targeting left-leaning activist groups.
Since the proscription took effect, British police have detained more than 4,000 people for expressing support for the movement, including elderly activists and Holocaust survivors.
A smaller gathering also took place on Saturday outside the US Consulate in Edinburgh. While no immediate arrests were made at the scene, Police Scotland stated that investigations remain ongoing to identify individuals who displayed proscribed banners or wore affiliated clothing, adding that appropriate measures will be taken in due course.
