North Korea has tested warheads containing cluster munitions as part of efforts to enable its military to "use all these types" of weapons by the end of the year, the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.

The test, conducted on Saturday, aimed to "assess the suitability for combat operations and destructive power of a warhead equipped with cluster munitions ahead of its installation on tactical ballistic missiles," the agency said.

According to officials, the weapon is "capable of turning an area of 12 to 13 hectares into ashes when used at its maximum power."

The director general of North Korea's Missile Administration said, "This year, we will allow units to select and use all these types [of weapons] according to operational objectives and the specific characteristics of their targets."

Images released by KCNA show a projectile being launched from a mobile platform amid a cloud of orange smoke. Other images show the impact sites of the cluster weapon on an island.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un did not attend Saturday's test. However, he previously oversaw a similar test in April, accompanied by his daughter, Ju Ae.
