Michigan candidate for the US Senate Abdul El-Sayed challenged President Donald Trump to take a lie detector test, offering in return to pass through a metal detector daily if elected.

The exchange stems from remarks Trump made at a rally in Port Huron, Michigan, on Sunday. Trump described El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee, as a “jihadist Muslim Brotherhood member” and said he was there “to keep a Jihadist Muslim Brotherhood member from becoming a United States senator.”

He accused El-Sayed of supporting extremists and claimed that anyone with such a record “would be screened and unable to get a seat on an airplane.”

Trump added: “He would be the only senator that will have to go through a metal detector before he’s allowed to go into the Senate. I want him to have a metal detector.”

El-Sayed has denied any ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.

El-Sayed responded days later at a campaign rally on the Western Michigan University campus.

Referencing Trump’s comment, he said: “He said that I should have to go through a metal detector. That’s all right, man. He took that Wolverine thing seriously. He knows I got claws.”

He then addressed the president directly: “But here’s the deal, Donald. Listen. I’ll go through a metal detector if you’ll sit for a lie detector. Simple. I got nothing to hide. You’ve got so much to hide.”

El-Sayed specified the questions he would pose. “My first question. Epstein. Second question. Did you win the 2020 election?”

He reiterated the terms of his offer: “So that’s the deal. I’ll go through a metal detector every day. You sit through a lie detector one time. That’s the deal.”

The references pointed to Trump’s past association with Jeffrey Epstein and his repeated claims about the 2020 presidential election results.

The Michigan Senate contest between El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers has been closely watched and remains competitive ahead of the midterm elections.

El-Sayed, if elected, would become the first Muslim to serve in the US Senate.

Trump and his allies have focused attacks on El-Sayed’s background and identity, while the Democrat has emphasized economic issues and denied the accusations leveled against him.
