Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will meet his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Moscow next week, Iranian media reported.

Pezeshkian is visiting Russia to attend the 8th Summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF).

Russia and Iran are among the most heavily sanctioned countries in the world and maintain close political ties. Their military and economic partnership has strengthened since Russia’s war with Ukraine in 2022.

The Tasnim news agency quoted Iran’s ambassador to Moscow, Kazem Jalali, as saying that “the Iranian president will visit Moscow to attend the Gas Exporting Countries Forum summit, which will be held on Tuesday, October 27.”

Jalali added that the two presidents would discuss economic cooperation as well as “geopolitical issues.”

On Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi indicated that talks between Tehran and Moscow would take place next week in the presence of both presidents.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited Iran on Monday in his first visit of its kind since the war began with the first US-‘Israeli’ strikes on Iran on February 28.

On that occasion, Araghchi said relations between Russia and Iran had reached their highest level in history.

In early October, Putin told his Iranian counterpart that Russia was ready to contribute to mediation efforts to end the war in the Middle East.

The meeting comes as negotiations between Washington and Tehran have remained deadlocked for months, while the United States and ‘Israel’ have stepped up threats to launch new strikes against Iran.
