The United States Embassy in Amman issued an official security alert following a deadly terrorist attack on a Greek Orthodox church in southern Jordan, confirming that the assault left seven dead and 40 wounded while advising American citizens to maintain heightened vigilance.

According to the security notice, the mission is closely monitoring developments surrounding the October 23 assault on the church in the village of Hammoud, located in Karak Governorate.

Citing figures provided by Jordan’s Public Security Directorate (PSD), the embassy reported that 40 injured victims remain hospitalized under medical treatment.

Active manhunt underway

Jordanian security agencies have sealed off the attack site in Hammoud and are conducting a coordinated manhunt to track down the perpetrators, with investigations continuing under tight operational secrecy.

In response to the attack, security measures have been intensified across the country.

Authorities have deployed additional personnel and established checkpoints around commercial centers, public venues, and diplomatic missions throughout Amman.

The embassy advised US nationals to expect an expanded police and security presence across multiple regions of the Kingdom, urging them to exercise situational awareness and monitor official updates from local law enforcement channels, including the Public Security Directorate on X (@Police_Jo).

The mission noted that it will continue reviewing developments and release further guidance as circumstances warrant.
