Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton called Thursday for the freedom of Palestine, Congo, Sudan and Syria, expressing hope for global peace during a discussion about colonialism, Africa’s history and the continent’s future in motorsport.
“I think we need to make sure we're pushing to free Congo, free Sudan, free Syria, free Palestine,” Hamilton said. “I think there's a lot of peace that I'm hoping that at some stage we get to.”
The remarks came as Hamilton discussed Formula One’s planned return to Africa, with Rwanda expected to host a Grand Prix in the early 2030s. The 41-year-old driver has said he hopes to extend his career long enough to compete in the race.
Hamilton’s latest call comes after several public statements in support of Palestinians. In Sep. 2025, he condemned the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, urged people not to stand by as Palestinians suffered and disclosed that he had donated to three organizations supporting those in need: the Palestine Red Crescent Society, Doctors Without Borders and Save the Children UK.
In May 2024, Hamilton declared, “Enough is enough,” calling for an end to the ‘Israeli’ attacks on Gaza and highlighting the trauma experienced by Palestinian children. Two months earlier, during Ramadan, he had sent his “love and support” to Palestinians facing danger, loss and heartbreak, while calling for a permanent ceasefire and the return of hostages.
By explicitly calling to “free Palestine” alongside Congo, Sudan and Syria, Hamilton once again used his global platform to draw attention to struggles extending far beyond motorsport, expressing hope for a future defined by greater freedom and peace.
Lewis Hamilton the man you are ❤️🩹 "I guess I'll finish it off with, you know. I think we need to make sure we're pushing to free Congo, free Sudan, free Syria, free Palestine. I think there's a lot of peace that I'm hoping that some stage we get to" https://t.co/RSyv0m6Mvn
